Trio of Flamsteadites to Walk the INCA Trail for Charity
(National deaf Children's Society)

Flamstead has a population of around 1000 adults; three of whom are going to walk the Inca Trail in June of this year (2003) to raise funds for the National Deaf Children's Society. The three are, in order of age ascendancy; Roy Larnden, the baby of the party, Richard Gamble, middle order and John Fountain, the elder. Their total age is approaching 160 years!

This, of course is somewhat younger than the Incas, who ruled in Peru from the 12th to the 16th century, when they were ousted by the Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro. (Flamstead Parish Church co-incidentally was built around this time.)

The Incas final resting place was Machu Picchu, which was not discovered until 1991, is the ultimate goal of the trek and is at the end of the Inca Trial.

The walk will take 4 days in total across spectacular mountains and valleys with 3 high passes which are described in the tourist books as 'often steep'. In fact there is a very long step climb to the highest point at 4198 metres (about 14,000 ft) and known as 'Dead Woman's Pass' - no doubt they will find out why it is so named.

The route is only 33 kms in length but when you consider altitude, the steep climbs and descents and kit to be carried it will be one hell of a challenge. So if you see them plugging away along the footpaths around Flamstead prior to their departure in mid June then you will know who they are and what they are up to!

Much is made of the altitude and weather which falls below freezing and it rains even in the dry season.

However the natives apparently have a cure for altitude sickness which makes you feel as if you are floating on air!

Other problems the intrepid walkers may experience along the way are: water purification tables are necessary due to the water quality and diahorrea tables are strongly advised. Also the toilets are apparently very basic compared to European expectations. All part of the challenge!

So if you feel like a challenge, why not sponsor one of the 3 walkers: Roy (01582 842334), John (01582 842272) or Richard (01582 840050).
