Scarecrow Festival 2010
This year's highly popular Scarecrow Festival will be held between midday Friday 20th August and 5.00pm
Sunday 22nd August. more details below.

Scarecrow Festival 2010

Now in its 9th year the very popular and highly successful annual Scarecrow Festival will be held between
Friday 20th (Mid-day onwards) - Sunday 22nd August 2009.
Started in 2002 as a means of raising money for the upkeep of the Village Church and the
Herts Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre the festival has gone from strength to strength. Every year so far there have been
over 90 scarecrows on display and many people now look forward to the annual event. The last few years over 5000 people have visited the
village each year.
The scarecrows will be on display and voting forms will be available from 2pm on Friday 20th. Voting closes on
Sunday 22nd at 5pm.

In addition to the scarecrows there will be lots of other things to see and do. The village pubs; The Spotted Dog, The Rose and
Crown and The Three Blackbirds
as well as the Sports and Social club will be open over the weekend selling a range of meals and snacks as well as drinks, both
alcoholic and soft,
including a selection of real ales.
The village hall will be open selling teas and cakes. In addition there will be range of craft stalls in the hall and the village shop will be
selling ice creams, cold drinks and sandwiches.
Viewing/voting times are as follows:
- Friday 20th August 2.00 - 5.00
- Saturday 21st August 10.00 - 6.00
- Sunday 22nd August 10.30 - 5.00

Voting Forms:
- £2.00 for One Form (*)
- £5.00 for a family (maximum 4 forms) (*)
- £0.50 programmes

All Week end:
- Refreshments in the village hall - cream teas and home cakes - walk the scarecrow trail and then come and enjoy a cream tea
without a pang of guilt!
- Sale of Bric a Brac in the village hall
- Tour Bus will operate from village to take the elderly / disabled around the village, starting from the village hall,
runs on the hour every hour apart from 1pm
- Care Bus will operate from car park to take the elderly / disabled to the village
- Watercolour Exhibition – St Leonard's Church
- Model train rides - St Leonard's Church yard
Saturday
- Ploughman's lunches in the Rose and Crown pub - well worth the short walk down the hill to Trowley Bottom, or catch the free bus
- Real Ale Beer festival in the Spotted Dog - 8 guest beers (tbc)
- BBQ and Steam traction engine in the Three Blackbirds
- Paella in the Spotted Dog pub (tbc)
- Cake Stall in the village hall - Herts MS Therapy Centre
- The Great Belldini's Magic Show - 1:40pm
- Cricket match - Sports and Social Club - starts 2:00pm
- Albury Morris Men – Village Hall Car Park - 2:00pm and 3:00pm
- Punch & Judy – adjacent to Village Hall - 2:30pm and 3:30pm
Sunday

- Drink and meals at the local pubs/clubs: The Spotted Dog, Three Blackbirds, Rose and Crown and the Sports and Social Club
Please park in the signposted Free Carparks, collect your voting form, walk the sign posted scarecrow trail
and view the scarecrows,
make your choice and deliver your voting form to the village hall.
There will be disabled parking (space permitting) where they you can also take advantage of the Markyate/Flamstead
care
bus which will be making tours of the scarecrow trail.
The village is not too large and it will take about 1.1/2 hrs to walk round the village, enjoy the scenery and see
all the scarecrows.
Please use the car parks provided if you are able-bodied. Flamstead is not too large and will not support
a large number of cars driving or parking carelessly
around the village.
Pictures of the scarecrows will be posted in the village hall should you 'forget' which one you intend to
vote for. As with previous years it is also planned to post pictures of all the scarecrows plus the winners
on this web site.
Please support the event, don't just come and look, buy a voting form. All the money raised goes
towards worthy causes; the Village Church and the Herts Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre. Lots of villagers
give up their free time
not just to make scarecrows but in organising the event; organising carparks, printing forms, distributing
forms, cooking cakes, manning the various stalls
and events, etc., etc., all the for good of the event and the causes it supports.

Bridget foes to Mars (via Flamstead) - 1st October 2009
Just under 40 people attended a talk in Flamstead village about the UK's
involvement in the ExoMars mission to Mars. The talk was part of World Space
Week 2009 (see www.worldspaceweek.org) and culminated with Bridget,
the prototype Breadboard Mars Rover Vehicle owned by EADS Astrium based in Stevenage, being driven round the car park
in the dark. It had been planned to demonstrate her capabilities in the hall but the doors were not wide enough!
